RESCUE ME
After his train is robbed at gunpoint, Remington Frost awakens from a blow to find the bandits gone…along with the woman he was shadowing for protection. No stranger to risk, Remington will do what it takes to bring Phoebe Apple to safety and her kidnappers to justice. But ransoming Phoebe is just the start of trouble…
Phoebe is shocked to learn that her mysterious rescuer is none other than Remington Frost, the son of her sister’s new husband. Home at Twin Star Ranch, she falls happily into western life—and cautiously in love with Remington. But danger hides close to home, and their romance illuminates a web of secrets and betrayal that may put the rancher and his intended bride past the point of rescue.

Goodman (The Devil You Know) will satisfy fans of historical western romance with this sprawling, lusty recreation of life, love, and slowly uncovered secrets on a Colorado cattle ranch in the spring of 1892. Engine 486 judders to a halt somewhere east of Frost Falls, and pretty and practical Phoebe Apple tends to a handsome stranger who’s knocked unconscious. When three masked gunmen attack, she wounds one of the robbers with a gun from her reticule, but they take her captive and hold her for ransom. She’s saved by the stranger she’d assisted in the train, who’s none other than Remington Frost. His father, Thaddeus, is the owner of the vast Twin Star ranch and the new husband of Fiona, Phoebe’s older sister. From the moment Remington and Phoebe meet, bodice-busting sparks fly. Phoebe’s been managing dicey situations since she was 13, but now she faces Remington’s amusement at her inept horse-riding, Fiona’s unhappiness with ranch life and hostility toward them both, and a continuing threat from the kidnappers. Goodman produces a welter of domestic and legal complications and a pleasingly droll set of ranch hands, townsfolk, and bad guys. Her fairy-tale Wild West also surrounds the requisite sexy courtship with plenty of rip-roaring action and appealing Colorado scenery, making up for slightly flat characters and an improbable plot. Goodman allows her heroine to do a lot of the reconnaissance after a train robbery that leaves our hero, Remington Frost, unconscious on the floor. The American West is never as vivid or romantic as when Goodman heads down the trail.

Being snatched from the train and held for ransom is not how Phoebe Apple envisioned her trip to Frost Falls, CO, to visit her older sister, Fiona. It's not what Remington Frost envisioned either--and he certainly didn't plan to be knocked out by the outlaws while they made off with Phoebe. Remington's been charged by his father, Fiona's husband, with ensuring that Phoebe arrives safely, and it doesn't take him long to follow the clever trail that Phoebe leaves, or to see her safely home to his family's ranch. Tangled relationships, serious communication issues, a blossoming romance, and a bond that needs renewal are key to this often-funny, danger-laced novel. VERDICT A smart, resourceful heroine and a savvy, worthy hero drive the complex plot of this touching story; another winner. Goodman (The Devil You Know) lives in West Virginia.
