Twelve-year-old Macy is an amateur treasure hunter who finds lost things along the southern Saskatchewan shores of Buffalo Pound Lake.

When her mom announces she's leaving her park ranger job at the lake to be a police officer in the city, Macy decides she needs to find a treasure big enough to put Buffalo Pound on the map so her family can stay put. But instead of a treasure, Macy finds a mermaid kidnapped from the West Coast and brought to the Prairies by a monster known only as "The Beast." Macy must find a missing magic shell to reconnect the mermaid with her family. But will Macy find the shell before the Beast does?

Gr 4-7-A fun fantasy adventure set in a small town in Canada. The main character, 12-year-old Macy, loves to go treasure hunting with her best friend Sam and her brother Ben, whom she lovingly refers to as "Bug." The characters spend their summer outside, exploring the grounds of their small lake town. Together, this team of amateur treasure hunters find a real mermaid being held captive in the prairie lake near their home. They need to follow clues to find the missing part of her special shell that will set her free. They must work together, trust in the quirky Mrs. Wilson, and battle "The Beast" to save the mermaid. Macy leads the adventure while also struggling with her fear of leaving her home and moving when her mom accepts a new job in the city. This is a magical story of bravery, friendship, and little brothers. Macy learns that being brave can be hard, but that change can lead to new adventures. VERDICT A great recommendation for any students interested in exploring, adventure, and treasure hunting.-Christina Pesiri, Island Trees H.S., Levittown, NY
